MOFCOM Spokesperson’s Remarks on the U.K.’s Claim That It Will Jointly Address China’s Dominance in the Automotive Sector

Q: According to recent media reports, UK Minister of State for Trade Anas Sarwar said that the UK and the EU must “work together and act in lockstep” to tackle China’s dominance in the automotive sector, and that discussions with European partners on imposing additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles “continue.” What is China’s comment?

A: We have noted the relevant reports. China-UK automotive cooperation is based on complementary strengths, equality and mutual benefit. The two countries are important economic and trade partners for each other. China urges the UK side to abide by WTO rules, think twice before acting, and not dance to the EU’s tune. China will keep a close watch on the UK’s moves. If the UK insists on adopting restrictive measures against Chinese electric vehicles, China will resolutely respond with countermeasures and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its industries.
