MOFCOM Spokesperson’s Remarks on the EU’s Inclusion of Chinese Enterprises in Its 19th Package of Sanctions against Russia

Q: On October 23, the European Union announced the listing of Chinese enterprises in its 19th package of sanctions against Russia and for the first time, sanctioned large Chinese refineries and oil trading companies. What is China’s comment on this?

A: Despite China’s repeated representations and dissuasion, the European Union has persisted in its course of action, once again listing Chinese enterprises in its 19th package of sanctions against Russia and imposing sanctions for the first time on large Chinese refineries and oil trading companies. China strongly deplores and firmly opposes this move.

China has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law and are not authorized by the United Nations. The EU’s actions run counter to the spirit of the consensus reached by Chinese and EU leaders, severely undermine the overall China-EU economic and trade cooperation, and jeopardize global energy security. China urges the EU to immediately cease listing Chinese enterprises and not to go further down the wrong path. China will take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises, as well as its own energy security and economic development.
