Q: Media reports say that the U.S. government is considering imposing an additional 7.5% tariff on imports from China under the pretext of the so-called excess capacity. If the U.S. side moves forward with this measure, how will China respond? Is China considering taking corresponding countermeasures? (MOFCOM Regular Press Conference August 27, 2026)

A: China has previously released the document titled “China’s Position on the So-called Excess Capacity Issue”, which comprehensively sets out China’s views and position on issues related to the so-called excess capacity. I would like to reiterate that production capacity should be viewed in a comprehensive, objective and fair manner, and should not be used as a pretext for protectionist practices. The U.S. has launched Section 301 investigations against 16 economies, including China, under the pretext of excess capacity, politicizing economic and trade issues. This is a typical act of unilateralism and protectionism, which China firmly opposes. We will continue to closely monitor and comprehensively assess the U.S. subsequent actions, and reserve the right to take all necessary measures.
