Statistics of Mainland-Taiwan Trade and Investment in January-September 2016

I. Mainland-Taiwan Trade

Mainland-Taiwan trade in September 2016 amounted to US$ 16.33 billion, up 3.9% year on year, and up 4.2% month on month. The mainland’s export to Taiwan was US$ 3.26 billion, down 10.4% year on year, and down 1.5% month on month; the mainland’s import from Taiwan was US$ 13.07 billion, up 7.8% year on year, and up 5.7% month on month.

Mainland-Taiwan trade in January-September 2016 amounted to US$ 127.55 billion, down 7.0% year on year, accounting for 4.8% of the total volume of the mainland’s external trade. The mainland’s export to Taiwan was US$ 29.14 billion, down 13.0% year on year, and the mainland’s import from Taiwan was US$ 98.41 billion, down 5.1% year on year. Taiwan is the mainland’s 7th largest trade partner and 6th largest source of imports.

II. Investment from Taiwan

In September 2016, a total of 324 Taiwan-invested projects were approved in the mainland, up 4.5% month on month, and the actually utilized Taiwan capital was US$ 60 million, down 50.0% month on month.

In January-September 2016, a total of 2,716 Taiwan-invested projects were approved in the mainland, up 30.5% year on year, and the actually utilized Taiwan capital was US$ 1.55 billion, up 28.6% year on year. (The actually utilized Taiwan capital would be US$ 2.79 billion if including the investment via the third country or region through free ports like British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Samoa, Mauritius and Barbados.)

By the end of September 2016, as many as 98,014 Taiwan-invested projects were approved in the mainland, and the actually utilized Taiwan capital was US$ 64.24 billion, accounting for 3.7% of the total utilized investment of the mainland from overseas.
