Report on Import & Export of Romania's Trade in Goods in January 2020

The preliminary statistics released by INS show that in January 2020, the total volume of import and export of Romania’s trade in goods was 12.71 billion euros, up 3.4% year on year. Of the total amount, the FOB export volume was 5.69 billion euros, up 3.3% year on year, and the CIF import volume was 7.02 billion euros, up 3.4% year on year.

I. Trade within the EU

In January 2020, the volume of Romania’s trade in goods with other EU countries was 9.55 billion euros, up 2.1% year on year, taking up 75.2% of Romania’s total import and export volume over the same period. Of the total amount, the export volume was 4.44 billion euros, up 2.5% year on year, accounting for 78.1% of the total export volume over the same period. The import volume was 5.11 billion euros, up 1.6% year on year, accounting for 72.8% of the total import volume over the same period.

II. Trade outside the EU

In January 2020, Romania’s trade volume with countries outside the EU was 3.15 billion euros, up 7.6% year on year, taking up 24.8% of Romania’s total import and export volume over the same period. Of the total amount, the export volume was 1.25 billion euros, up 6.2% year on year, accounting for 21.9% of the total export volume over the same period. The import volume was 1.91 billion euros, up 8.6% year on year, accounting for 27.2% of the total import volume over the same period.

III. Trade deficit

In January 2020, calculated by the FOB value of exports and the CIF value of imports, Romania’s trade deficit was 1.32 billion euros, up 3.9% year on year. Of the total amount, the trade deficit within the EU was 660 million euros, down 4% year on year. The trade deficit outside the EU was 660 billion euros, up 13.3% year on year.

IV. Trade structure

In terms of trade structure, in January 2020, Romania’s imports and exports mainly fell into the categories of machinery and transportation equipment (accounting for 48.1% of the total export volume and 36.2% of the total import volume respectively over the same period) and other processing products (taking up 30.8% of the total export volume and 29.4% of the total import volume respectively over the same period). The specific structure is as follows:

2. Commodity structure of Romania’s CIF imports in January 2020

Machinery and transportation equipment took up 36.2%.

Other processing products took up 29.4%.

Chemicals and related products took up 13.8%.

Food, beverages and tobacco took up 9.2%.

Mineral fuel, lubricant, etc. took up 8.7%.

Raw materials took up 2.6%.
