Report on Import&Export of Service Trade in Romania in January-December 2019

The preliminary data released by the National Bank of Romania (BNR) show that from January to December 2019, the total volume of import and export of Romania's trade in services was 44.09 billion euros, with a year-on-year increase of 12.4%. Of the total amount, the export volume was 26.32 billion euros, up 10.6% year on year, and the import volume was 17.77 billion euros, up 15.2% year on year. The surplus of trade in services was 8.55 billion euros, up 2.3% year on year.


In terms of sectors, the sectors with relatively high import and export volume of service trade were as follows:

1. Transportation Services

In January-December 2019, the import and export volume of trade in transportation services was 11.37 billion euros, up 15.5% year on year, accounting for 25.8% of the total trade in services. Of the total amount, the export volume was 7.86 billion euros, up 13.7% year on year, and the import volume was 3.51 billion euros, up 19.7% year on year.

In terms of transport mode, road transportation services took up the biggest proportion, with an import and export volume of 7.61 billion euros, accounting for 66.9% of the total trade volume of transportation services, followed by air transportation services, with a trade volume of 2.21 billion euros, accounting for 19.4%.

2. Other Business Services

In January-December 2019, the import and export volume of other business services was 10.15 billion euros, up 14.5% year on year, accounting for 23% of the total trade in services. Of the total amount, the export volume was 5.47 billion euros, up 11.7% year on year, and the import volume was 4.68 billion euros, up 18.1% year on year.


More specifically, the import and export volume of technology, trade-related and other commercial services was 5.39 billion euros, up 15.2% year on year, accounting for 53.2% of the total volume of trade in other business service.

The import and export volume of professional and management advisory services was 3.85 billion euros, with an increase of 8.3% year on year, accounting for 37.9% of the total volume of trade in other business service.

3. Communication, Computer and Information services

In January-December 2019, the import and export volume of trade in communication, computer and information services was 7.76 billion euros, up 12.7% year on year, accounting for 17.6% of the total trade in services. Of the total amount, the export volume was 5.37 billion euros, up 11.9% year on year, and the import volume was 2.39 billion euros, up 14.4% year on year.

4. Tourism Services

In January-December 2019, the import and export volume of trade in tourism services was 8.49 billion euros, up 14.7% year on year, accounting for 19.3% of the total service trade. Of the total amount, the export volume was 3.18 billion euros, up 10.3% year on year, and the import volume was 5.32 billion euros, up 17.6% year on year.

5. Processing Trade

In January-December 2019, the import and export volume of processing trade was 3.1 billion euros, down 0.6% year on year, accounting for 7% of the total service trade. Of the total amount, the export volume was 2.95 billion euros, up 0.3% year on year, and the import volume was 150 million euros, down 15.4% year on year.

Besides, the import and export volume of intellectual property royalties was 900 million euros, up 0.1% year on year, accounting for 2% of the total service trade. The import and export volume of maintenance services was 670 million euros, with an increase of 0.4% year on year, accounting for 1.5% of the total service trade. The import and export volume of construction services was 590 million euros, up 6% year on year, accounting for 1.3% of the total trade in services. The import and export volume of financial services was 500 million euros, down 7.5% year on year, taking up 1.1% of the total trade in services. The import and export volume of insurance and pension services was 280 million euros, up 11.8% year on year, accounting for 0.6% of the total trade in services. The volume of import and export of human resources, culture, entertainment and government services was less significant.
