The preliminary statistics released by INS show that in January-December 2019, the total volume of import and export of Romania’s trade in goods was 155.29 billion euros, up 3.1% year on year. Of the total amount, the FOB export volume was 69 billion euros, up 1.9% year on year, and the CIF import volume was 86.28 billion euros, up 4.2% year on year.
In December, the FOB export volume of Romania was 4.83 billion euros, up 4.9% year on year, and the CIF import volume was 6.59 billion euros, up 4.5% year on year.
I. Trade within the EU
In January-December 2019, the volume of Romania’s trade in goods with other EU countries was 117.23 billion euros, up 3.0% year on year, taking up 75.5% of Romania’s total import and export volume over the same period. Of the total amount, the export volume was 52.83 billion euros, up 1.6% year on year, accounting for 76.6% of the total export volume over the same period. The import volume was 64.4 billion euros, up 4.1% year on year, accounting for 74.6% of the total import volume over the same period.
II. Trade outside the EU
In January-December 2019, Romania’s trade volume with countries outside the EU was 38.05 billion euros, up 3.7% year on year, taking up 24.5% of Romania’s total import and export volume over the same period. Of the total amount, the export volume was 16.17 billion euros, up 2.7% year on year, accounting for 23.4% of the total export volume over the same period. The import volume was 21.88 billion euros, up 4.4% year on year, accounting for 25.4% of the total import volume over the same period.
III. Trade deficit
In January-December 2019, the FOB value of exports was offset by the CIF value of imports. Romania’s trade deficit was 17.28 billion euros, up 14.3% year on year. Of the total amount, the trade deficit within the EU was 11.56 billion euros, up 16.9% year on year. The trade deficit outside the EU was 5.72 billion euros, up 9.4% year on year.
In December, Romania’s trade deficit was 1.77 billion euros, and dropped by 3.4% year on year.
IV. Trade structure
In terms of trade structure, in January-December 2019, the main categories of Romania’s imports and exports were machinery and transportation equipment (accounting for 47.2% of the total export volume and 37.3% of the total import volume respectively over the same period) and other processing products (taking up 31.7% of the total export volume and 30.4% of the total import volume respectively over the same period).
