Briefings on Japan’s Trade in December, 2018

According to the statistics from the Japanese customs, in 2018, the import and export volume of Japanese goods reached US$1486.57 billion, up 8.5% over the same period of the previous year (the same below). Among these, the exports were US$738.20 billion, up 5.7%; the imports were US$748.37 billion, up 11.3%. The trade deficit was US$10.17 billion, down 138.8%.

In December, the import and export of Japanese goods reached US$125.68 billion, down 0.4%. Among these, the exports were US$62.59 billion, down 3.2%; the imports were US$63.09 billion, up 2.6%. The trade deficit was US$510 million.

In 2018, the bilateral import and export volume of goods between Japan and China was US$317.53 billion, up 6.8%. Among these, Japan’s exports to China were US$143.99 billion, up 8.4%, accounting for 19.5% of Japan’s total exports, up 0.5 percentage points; Japan’s imports from China were US$173.54 billion, up 5.5%, accounting for 23.2% of Japan’s total imports, down 1.3 percentage points. The trade deficit between Japan and China was US$29.55 billion, down 6.8%.

By December, China had been Japan's largest export trade partner and the largest import trade partner.
