Briefings on Japan’s Trade in May, 2018

According to the statistics from Japanese customs, in January-May 2018, the import and export volume of Japanese goods reached US$ 611.39 billion, up 11.4% over the same period of the previous year (the same below). Among these, the exports were US$305.4 billion, up 10.2%; the imports were US$305.99 billion, up 12.6%. The trade deficit was US$600 million, down 111.1%.

In May, the import and export of Japanese goods reached US$120.59 billion, up 13.7%. Among these, the exports were US$57.65 billion, up 10.6%; the imports were US$62.94 billion, up16.7%. The trade deficit was US$5.29 billion.

In January-May, the bilateral import and export volume of goods between Japan and China was US$128 billion, up 10.4%. Among these, Japan’s exports to China were US$57.88 billion, up 14.5%, accounting for 19.0% of Japan’s total exports, up 0.7 percentage points; Japan’s imports from China were US$70.12 billion, up 7.3%, accounting for 22.9% of Japan’s total imports, down 1.2 percentage points. The trade deficit between Japan and China was US$12.24 billion, down 17.1%.

By May, China is Japan's largest export trade partner and the largest import trade partner.
