Wang Wentao: Elevating China-Vietnam Trade and Economic Cooperation to a Higher Level

On the afternoon of June 3, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao had a phone conversation with Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien. They had an in-depth exchange of views on promoting China-Vietnam trade and economic cooperation. Assistant Minister of Commerce Ren Hongbin and Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam Tran Quoc Khanh also participated in the event.

Wang Wentao said that, this year General Secretary Xi Jinping has phone conversations with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Nguyen Xuan Phuc respectively, and reached a series of important consensuses on consolidating political mutual trust and expanding and deepening cooperation in various fields, pointing out the direction for the development of China-Vietnam relations. China is fostering a new development pattern and promoting higher-standard opening up, which will provide a broader market and cooperation opportunities for countries around the world, including Vietnam. The Ministry of Commerce of China stands ready to maintain close communication and exchanges with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam to jointly elevate bilateral economic cooperation and trade to a new level and make new contribution to building the two countries into a community with a shared future that bears strategic significance.

Wang Wentao pointed out that under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries, China-Vietnam economic cooperation and trade has continued to make new achievements in recent years. Facing the adverse effects of COVID-19, bilateral trade and investment continue to grow rapidly, which demonstrates the great resilience and development potential of bilateral economic relations and trade. In the next step, the two sides should strengthen cooperation on joint BRI development to promote unimpeded trade and infrastructure connectivity. The two sides should continue to expand trade and investment cooperation, promote e-commerce cooperation, and promote the development of border trade. China supports high-quality and safe agricultural and aquatic products and food from various countries, including Vietnam, in entering the Chinese market. China welcomes Vietnam to continue to actively participate in the China International Import Expo (CIIE) and the China-ASEAN Expo. China attaches importance to the facilitation of customs clearance between China and Vietnam and stands ready to strengthen communication with Vietnam. It is hoped that Vietnam can make good use of relevant facilitation measures by China.

Nguyen Hong Dien said that Vietnam and China are important economic and trade partners. Amid the spreading global epidemic, economic cooperation and trade between the two countries has achieved good results, laying a solid foundation for the development of bilateral economic and trade relations, which is not only conducive to the economic development of the two countries, but could also help them jointly cope with changes in the world economic landscape. Vietnam is willing to strengthen the alignment between “Two Corridors and One Belt” and BRI with China, enhance the development of relevant economic and trade mechanism, promote e-commerce cooperation, and promote trade promotion cooperation. Chinese enterprises are welcome to invest in Vietnam and Vietnam is willing to continue to create a favorable business environment. Vietnam thanks China for expanding imports of high-quality Vietnamese agricultural products, and hopes China could continue to provide support and facilitation for the export of Vietnamese agricultural and aquatic products to China.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional economic cooperation issues of common interest.
