Chinese Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Commerce of Myanmar Sign the MOU of Building China-Myanmar Border Economic Cooperation Zone

On May 16 2017, under the witness of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Myanmar's State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, Chinese Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan and the Minister for Transport and Communications U Thant Sin Maung officially signed the MOU of Building China-Myanmar Border Economic Cooperation Zone between Chinese Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Commerce of Myanmar in Beijing (hereinafter referred to as the MOU).

China-Myanmar border economic cooperation zone ushers a new way for trade and economic cooperation and a new mode for border cooperation between the two countries, which is conducive to further deepening China-Myanmar trade and economic cooperation, strengthening China-Myanmar friendship, consolidating and developing comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership between the two countries and benefiting the regions and peoples of the two countries. The signing of the MOU is an important milestone of the construction of China-Myanmar border economic cooperation zone. Both sides will speed up negotiation and positively promote consequent work according to the arrangements of MOU.

The bilateral border economic cooperation zone is a special region which is mapped out by both sides in the contiguous areas to carry out common construction, common management and common benefit according to the economic development situation and industrial feature of border regions between China and neighboring countries. It is an important platform for neighboring countries to innovate their cooperation mode and accelerate the opening up of border regions. At present, China has built China-Kazakhstan Khorgos International Border Cooperation Center and China-Laos Mohan-Boten economic cooperation zone with Kazakhstan and Laos respectively.
