2016 China-U.S. Development Cooperation Conference Held in Beijing

To implement the consensus reached by the leaders of China and the U.S. on China-U.S. Development Cooperation during President Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S. in September 2015, to promote the bilateral cooperation in specific projects, and according to the Memorandum of Understanding on U.S.-China Development Cooperation and the Establishment of an Exchange and Communication Mechanism between the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Commerce of China, the Deputy China International Trade Representative Zhang Xiangchen and the Administrator of USAID Gayle E. Smith co-chaired the 2016 China-U.S. Development Cooperation Conference in Beijing on April 28.

Both China and the U.S. introduced their important initiatives in the development field, reviewed the progress of China-U.S. development cooperation in recent years, summarized the experience and in-depth communication and exchanges on global development issues like food safety, public health, humanitarian rescue and disaster reduction, cooperation under multilateral mechanism and the UN’s goals of sustainable development of 2030. The two parties also discussed the future cooperation.

Attending are the representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the Central Leading Group on Financial and Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Health and Family Planning Commission, China Earthquake Administration and Chinese Center of Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the representatives from USAID, the U.S. Department of Treasury, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. enter of Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Embassy to China.

On September 25, 2015, during President Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S., Chinese Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng and the Acting Administrator of USAID Alfonso Lenhardt signed the Memorandum of Understanding on U.S.-China Development Cooperation and the Establishment of an Exchange and Communication Mechanism between the United States Agency for International Development and the Ministry of Commerce of China.
