Spokesperson from the Department of Market Operation and Consumption Promotion briefed on China’s car consumption in the first 7 months of 2021

From January to July this year, the car consumption remained an upward trend overall. The trading volume of second-hand cars and the recycling volume of scrapped motor vehicles both leaped. Sales of new energy cars registered a record high. The upward base in the same period of last year and auto-chip shortage have added pressure to new car sales growth since this May before affecting the retail ends gradually. The car consumption market presents the following features:

First, growth of new car sales from production enterprises slowed down. New car sales from production enterprises from January to July stood at 14.756 million, up by 19.3% year-on-year and 4.4% over the same period of 2019. New car sales in July was 1.864 million, down by 11.9% year-on-year, registering the third month with negative growth since this May.

Second, new car sales growth from retail ends faced pressure. New car sales growth from retail ends from January to July stood at 15.488 million, up by 25.9% year-on-year and 4.0% over the same period in 2019. In July, it was 1.991 million, down by 3.9% year-on-year, registering the first negative growth since this year but with a much slower drop compared with new car sales from production enterprises.

Third, sales of new energy cars surpassed that of 2020. Sales of new energy cars from production enterprises from January to July were 1.478 million, tripling year-on-year and doubling over the same period of 2019, also surpassing the 2020 sales. New energy cars sales account for 10% of the total new car sales. In July, sales of new energy cars reached 0.271 million, up by 1.6 folds year-on-year and setting a record monthly high.

Fourth, trading volume of second-hand cars leaped. The trading volume of second-hand cars from January to July rose by 46.0% year-on-year to reach 9.893 million, an increase of 22.5% over the same period of 2019. In July, it stood at 1.459 million, up by 15.7% year-on-year. The ratio of second-hand car trading volume to new car sales reached 0.78, setting a new record high again.

Fifth, old motor vehicles were scrapped faster. By the end of July, there have been 873 recycling and dismantling enterprises, 98 more compared with the end of 2020. Recycled old motor vehicles from January to July rose to 1.567 million, up by 37.8% year-on-year and 23.5% over the same period of 2019. In July, 0.262 million were recycled, up by 22.3% year-on-year.
