MOFCOM Department of Outward Investment and Economic Cooperation Comments on the Outward Investment and Cooperation Situation of China in January-May

The principal of the MOFCOM Department of Outward Investment and Economic Cooperation introduced the outward investment and cooperation situation of China in January-May 2016 on June 15.

In January-May 2016, the Chinese domestic investors carried out the non-financial direct investment in 4,136 outward enterprises in 151 countries and regions, with an accumulative investment of RMB$479.26 billion (US$73.52 billion, up 61.9% year on year). The newly-signed contractual value of contracted foreign projects was RMB492.1 billion (US$75.49 billion), up 11.7% year on year. The various kinds of labor outside totaled 987,000.

The principal pointed out that in January-May, China's outward investment and cooperation business showed the following features in January-May:

In terms of outward investment, the outward investment continued to maintain a large growth compared with the same period last year, but it decreased 32.8% month on month compared with the investment value in April. The investment destination mainly focuses on the seven major economies such as China Hong Kong, ASEAN, EU, Australia, the United States, Russian and Japan with a value of US$59.1 billion, accounting for 80.4% of the total foreign direct investment of China.

With regard to the foreign contractual projects, the newly-signed contractual value increased remarkably. Especially, in the 60 countries related to the "Belt and Road", the number of the newly-signed contractual projects reached 1,652, with a newly-signed contractual value of US$39.11 billion, accounting for 51.8% of the total newly-signed outward contractual value of China, with an increase of 55.9% year on year. The contractual projects with a larger contractual value are the coal-fired power plant project of Egypt contracted by Shanghai Electric Group Co Ltd (with a contractual value of US$2.64 billion), the water conveyance project of Kerman Iran contracted by China Gezhouba Group (with a contractual value of US$2 billion) and the SALAM coal-fired power plant project of Bangladesh contracted by the 3rd Project Company of Shandong Electric Power Construction (with a contractual value of US$1.87 billion), etc.

As for labor cooperation, since 2016, China has sent all kinds of labor with a number of 181,000. In May, China sent 40,000 people, with a decrease of 4,000 compared with that of the same period last year. By the end of this May, the dispatched laborers of China reached 987,000, with a decrease of 20,000 compared with that of the same period last year.
