Gala launches opening reception

Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua, who is also the director of the 104th session of Chinese Import & Export Fair, or Canton Fair, said in Guangzhou on Tuesday that the fair will surely bring new development chances for participants.

Speaking at the opening reception for the fair, which is hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and Guangdong Provincial People's Government, Huang said the Canton Fair is still being dubbed "a link of friendship and a bridge of trade" and has played a pivotal role in promoting the country's trade with the outside world.

Since its inauguration in the spring of 1957, the fair is being held twice a year in spring and autumn, and initiating reforms in exhibition phase.

The current fair, organized by China Foreign Trade Center in collaboration with Hebei Provincial People's Government, has made the exhibition in three phases, namely October 15-19, October 24-28 and November 2-6.

Huang affirmed that he thought the fair is still the major channel of China's foreign trade and a key window in reform and opening up, and will strive to provide a highly efficient, convenient, safe and harmonious trade environment for the guests.

The China Foreign Trade Center noted in the fair website that a total of 22,000 enterprises are expected to join the fair, which is the largest trade gala of the highest level with the largest attendance and business turnover.

Vice-Governor Long Zhuangwei of Hebei Province said at the reception that as a co-host of the fair, he hoped that Hebei could make friends with the outside world, promote exports and spur investment to the province at the fair.

While recalling China's economic achievement during the past 30 years and the fair's progress, Vice-Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng, affirmed in his speech that the Canton Fair has witnessed the tremendous changes in China's foreign trade, whose volume has jumped to $2.17 trillion in 2007 from $20.64 billion in 1978, or an increase of 105 times.

The reception, chaired by Vice-President and Secretary General of the Canton Fair Wang Junwen, also drew the participation of leaders from the central government's liaison office in Macao Special Administrative Region, Heilongjiang, Gansu and Qinghai provinces, in addition to guests from relevant ministries, trade delegations from provinces, municipalities or autonomous regions.
