![]() By Qiu Quanlin Hong Kong SAR-based enterprises are taking the advantage of the ongoing China Import and Export Fair, the country's largest trade exhibition event, to boost the region's commercial brands. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) has put together a large delegation of 40 Hong Kong-based brands to showcase their products at the fair, also widely known as Canton Fair. The 40 enterprises occupy a combined exhibition area of about 1,000 square meters, displaying products ranging from electronics, home appliances, gifts and toys, to watches. The HKTDC had set strict standards for the selection of enterprises to participate in the fair, in order to promote brands that have strong potential in the international market. According to the HKTDC, all exhibitors should be registered in Hong Kong and "must have developed original brands and promoted their products through other channels." In another development, South China's Guangdong Province, which neighbors Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, has encouraged local enterprises to purchase goods that are being displayed at the international import pavilion. The import pavilion, which was launched for the first time at this session of the fair, has attracted 314 enterprises from 36 countries and regions seeking an opportunity to find a Chinese market for their products. Guangdong, one of the economic powerhouses in South China, has sent a procurement delegation consisting of more than 800 representatives from 200 local enterprises to the fair. Most of them are import-oriented industrial associations, science and research institutes, and large industrial corporations. Organizing committee sources also indicated that so far at least 6,000 Chinese corporate buyers have been invited to the Canton fair. Local governments in Foshan and Zhuhai have worked out a series of measures, including briefings on import procedures and promotion of the international import pavilion, to encourage enterprises to get actively involved in purchasing overseas goods displayed at the fair. The Guangdong delegation has also attached great importance to IPR (intellectual property rights) protection at the fair by making public a list of enterprises that had allegedly violated IPR laws at the fair's last session.
