Located at the juncture of the South China Economic Rim, Southwest China Economic Rim and ASEAN Economic Rim, the city of Fangchenggang is a rising port city at Beibu Bay in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

It is the only city in China with both sea and road links with ASEAN countries, making it the main port hub for trading with these nations.

Spurred on by the growth of the port, Fangchenggang now has four districts and county-level cities of Gangkou District, Fangcheng District, Shangsi County and Dongxing City under its jurisdiction. It faces Southeast Asia, borders Southwest China, and neighbors Guangdong Province, and the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions in the east, while linking with Vietnam in the west. Dongxing City and Vietnam's Mong Cai City are separated only by a small river.

Its advantageous location has made Fangchenggang a convenient overseas access for Southwest China, central south China and South China. The city also finds it convenient to conduct border trade, cross-nation tourism and international exchange and cooperation.

Fangcheng Port in the city has great potential for port development. Its wind-shielded port is known for its deep water, short sea-lane, absence of silt and its long usable coastlines. It has the capacity to build more than 180 deep-water wharfs for 10,000 tonnage ships. There are 36 wharfs at present, of which 22 can be used by ships of 10,000 tonnage. Its annual actual combined throughput has surpassed 30 million tons.

The port has now opened many container routes for Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and Hong Kong and Macao. It has trade and port links with 220 other Chinese ports, as well as those from more than 80 countries and regions.

Fangcheng Port is one of the 24 main ports along the Chinese coast. It is also one of the 13 ports in China that handle iron ore imports and exports and one of the 19 container branch ports. This has affirmed its status as a major port hub between China and the ASEAN.

The port is also a major base for the transfer of iron ore, coal, cement and grains. It shoulders the main transferring task of block goods entering and exiting southwest and central south China.

The city has a long coastline and a great many peninsular bays. It has abundant land for industrial use. The land is suitable for large-scale heavy industry projects such as petrochemicals, iron and steel, power industry, machinery and shipbuilding.

The city of Fangchenggang has four national first-class ports, one second-class port and five border trading points. It has more than 20 commercial and fishing ports such as Fangcheng Port, Qisha Port and Jingdao Port, with more than 90 wharfs. The city has also built a port that is able to berth ships of 200,000 tons and has an annual throughput of 250,000 TEUs.

At these ports, Fangcheng Port has built a batch of specialized storage houses for large-scale goods, ship loading and unloading equipment and a complete set of advanced container computer management system. It now has the capacity to load and unload various break-bulk goods, bulk cargo, container and petrochem products, as well as carry out the function of storage, transit shipment and through transport.

The 200,000-ton ore wharf at Fangcheng Port can be anchored on both sides, making it the only wharf now in the country that can conduct ship-to-ship loading and unloading.

The special sulphur and phosphorus dock at Fangchenggang is China's only modern special dock for sulphur and phosphorus. Its throughput of sulphur and phosphorus last year was the highest among Chinese ports. There are also special railway lines and highways linking directly to the dock.

Fangcheng Port is a pilot port for China to implement greater customs clearance throughout the country. It is also one of the 11 pilot ports with an instant examination system for imported products. It is also the only pilot port in Guangxi to implement rapid customs clearance and examination.

The city also boasts easy access to an efficient highway and railway network. The Guilin-Beihai Highway connects Fangchenggang with the sea exit for Southwest China. It connects major regions and cities of Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Chongqing Municipality. The port railway joins with the Nanning-Fangchenggang railway, making it easier for cargo from Southwest China to reach Fangcheng Port via the Nanning-Kunming Railway.
