Friday,October 19,2007 Posted: 09:13 BJT(0113 GMT)  www.caexpo.org

Agriculture is one of the 10 significant cooperation sectors in China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA). Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural Cooperation between China and ASEAN was signed in 2002, which unfolded communication and cooperation in all aspects of agriculture within CAFTA.
Agriculture differences and complementarities illuminate a huge growing space for China-ASEAN trade and cooperation, principals from China-ASEAN Expo Secretariat said. Agriculture development in China is constrained seriously by natural resources; while ASEAN are superior with respect of farm land, water and a fair big part is undeveloped. Weather differences diversify advantageous products, like temperate products in China and tropical ones (palm oil, cocoa, cashew etc) in ASEAN.

With low production of paddy rice and corn in countries like Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Indonesia, China’s advanced agricultural technology and high yield crop varieties are warmly welcomed.
According to statistic, China-ASEAN trade keeps increasing in past 5 years. Bilateral agriculture export increased from 1.865 billion to 3.067 billion USD in 2002~2006, a growth of 67%. 2006 reached to 160.8 billion USD with agricultural trade amounting to 8.02 billion USD, an increase of 31%. China has signed bilateral agricultural cooperation agreements or memorandum of understanding with 8 ASEAN countries, -held 43 training courses in ASEAN by 2005, conducted 13 small technology demonstration and extension projects, including hybrid rice cultivation, terracing demonstration bases, complete sets for livestock feed, all with good results.

Achievements also show on cooperation between CAEXPO host province- Guangxi and ASEAN. East Asia Sugar Group with investment from Thailand located in Chongzuo city of Guangxi several years ago. Singapore WILLMAR Company and Fangchenggang city co-invested Dahai Oils and Grains Industries (Fangchenggang) Co and has run successfully. The 3rd CAEXPO in 2006 harvested about 0.3 billion USD of agricultural contract value.

Being the most important platform for China-ASEAN agricultural cooperation, the 4th CAEXPO will be held on 28th~31nd in October in Nanning city, Guangxi, which will continue topics of rural applicable technology, bring forth results from the fifth anniversary of China “Agricultural Scientific and Technological Achievements Financing Projects” and advanced applicable technology from ASEAN. Focus on projects of breeding and deep-processing technology, modern agricultural equipment and biotechnology. New varieties for subtropical areas, farm and sideline product deep-processing equipments, small farm machinery, fertilizer and other agricultural biotechnology will be seen. The agriculture pavilion has an area of 2,600 square meters and a scale of about 450 projects in various forms. Group exhibitors from ASEAN countries will be invited.
