CIFIT: An annual victory for friendship, cooperation
Saturday,August 11,2007 Posted: 16:07 BJT(0807 GMT)  China Daily

In May of this year China Daily interviewed the United States Ambassador to China Clark T. Randt, Jr.

Ambassador Randt said two things I feel bear repeating. He noted that the United States has more trade disputes with Canada than it does with China, saying: "If you don't have any disputes, you don't have any trade;" and he made the point that "China's low-cost and high-quality exports help the American people have a higher standard of living.

By the same token, we, as the biggest country customer of China, have been an engine for your growth."

As a US businessman working in China, and as the elected president of the more than 1,100 others who are members of the American Chamber of Commerce in South China, I want to emphasize the importance of Ambassador Randt's statements.

The economies of the US and the People's Republic of China are closely linked, and will continue to be so in the future.

I believe that China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT), which we are all currently engaging in, is one of the great sources and motivators of this relationship.

We are participating in a grand orchestration whose influence spreads far beyond Xiamen, and far beyond China, and there is no doubt in my mind that the business conducted here-meetings, negotiations and friendships-will go on to have a substantial effect on the global economy.

I am proud to be a part of this, and I urge you to take a moment to examine just how profound an effect our collective actions during these days will have on the economic progress not only of China, but also the US and the rest of the world.

This year our more than 100 delegates will be looking for more investments in China-our companies will be investing in excess of $17 billion in China in the next three years-and since CIFIT has now added a very important "import" section, we will be looking for more opportunities in the domestic Chinese market as well.

I firmly believe it is by both importing and exporting between our two nations that we will overcome the highly publicized but also highly temporary trade imbalance that we are all working to address.

And in this effort, we, the companies that compose our American Chamber of Commerce in South China and all of our Chinese partners, friends and associates, have been and will be on the front lines.

CIFIT has seen strong growth in the past years that we have attended.

Each year, there are more companies in our delegation and more opportunities for cooperation and mutual benefit.

Each year is an opportunity to see old friends and to make new ones.

Each year is a front-row seat to the further growth and metamorphosis of the Chinese economy into a truly world-class one.

Needless to say, there is only one place you will find myself and the American Chamber of Commerce in South China during early September.

So thank you for participating in this with me.

It is truly my honor to be a part of this remarkable dream for a prosperous future, to stand beside each and every one of you, and to look toward a life of the opportunity and liberty that will accompany this prosperity for you, myself, and all of our children.
