Chinese Government and UNDP Signed MOU on Enhancing Cooperation


Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and the UN Development Program (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark attended ,on Sept. 22, 2010,the signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Enhancing Cooperation between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the UN Development Program. Wang Chao, Vice Minister of Commerce of China, and Chhibber, UN Assistant Secretary-general, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, on behalf of the Chinese government and UNDP respectively, signed the MOU. Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming was also present at the ceremony.

Review on the friendly partnership between China and UNDP, the MOU determined that UNDP will continue its aid in technology to China in the new cooperation plan from 2011 to 2015. And the cooperation sectors will cover poverty reduction, environment and sustainable development, gender equality, etc. Meanwhile, China and UNDP will try to develop tripartite cooperation with another developing country within the framework of South-South cooperation and stressed the principles of non-interference in internal affairs of the host country, consistent with the priority sectors in its development strategy, and obeying its laws and regulations. China and UNDP would like to share its development experiences with other developing countries within the framework of South-South cooperation so as to promote to realize the Millennium Development Goals by enhancing cooperation.

Since the establishment of partnership between China and UNDP in 1979, UNDP has provided grant aid to develop cooperation projects covering poverty reduction, capacity building, environment and sustainable development and training, which played an active role in promoting the economic and social development of China. In September of 2010, UNDP and the Executive Board of UNFPA approved the cooperation plan between China and UNDP from 2011 to 2015.
