Ministry of Commerce Released Report on China’s E-commerce 2008-2009

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce held press conference on releasing Report on China’s E-commerce 2008-2009, in Beijing on August 30, 2010. Vice Commerce Minister Jiang Yaoping, officials from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Bureau of Statistics, experts on e-commerce, and people from the media attended the press conference.

The five-chapter Report on China E-commerce Report 2008-2009 presents the new developments of China’s e-commerce in 2008-2009, elaborates on the position and role of e-commerce in national economy, and focuses on the development environment and application status of e-commerce, especially on the development of e-commerce service industry and the development of e-commerce in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong and some other cities and provinces, and proposes policy suggestions on how to promote the better and faster development of e-commerce.

The report pointed out that, China’s e-commerce has entered the practical development stage, with six features: firstly, large scale enterprises has began to apply collaborative commerce; secondly, e-commerce application by SMEs enhanced; thirdly, the scale of on-line shopping has been enlarged; fourthly, the professional service system is taking shape; fifthly, the e-commerce application is becoming more extensive in social and economic life; sixthly, the role of e-commerce in coping with the financial crisis, hosting Beijing Olympic Games and combating natural disasters is more obvious.

According to statistics, in 2008, volume of e-commerce in China hit 3.1 trillion yuan, and that of online shopping reached 125.7 billion yuan; in 2009, the volume of e-commerce hit 3.8 trillion yuan, and that of online shopping reached 258.6 billion yuan, respectively up by 21.7% and 105.8% year on year.

According to the report, against the impact of the international financial crisis, e-commerce could help Chinese enterprises to explore markets, reduce costs, and raise efficiency. Having become an important part of China’s modern service industry, e-commerce can help to promote the transformation and update of traditional industries, and the forming of modern trade logistics system, which plays an important role in boosting national economic development.

Vice Minister Jiang Yaoping said, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council has always attached great importance to the development of e-commerce, and create favorable environment for e-commerce development, set up the strategic position of e-commerce, and define the priority fields for e-commerce development, through a series of measures such as formulating policies and promulgating laws. The Ministry of Commerce will, based on the strategies of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, together with related ministries and commissions and local governments, continue to improve the environment for e-commerce development, guide the enterprises to apply the e-commerce, promote the application of technology of “The Internet of things” in business field, make full use of e-commerce in boosting national economy, so as to contribute to coping with the international financial crisis and maintain the balanced development of economy.
