The UN Provides Emergency Aid to China’s Quake-hit Areas

According to China’s permanent mission to the UN, on May 16, Ban Ki-Moon, the UN Secretary-General announced through the spokesman that the central will response urgently to appropriate US$7 million dollars for supporting Chinese government’s emergent rescue and relief work after the Sichuan earthquake. With the aim of supporting the emergent rescue and relief assistance in disaster-hit areas and help the victims to resume normal life as soon as possible, the organizations of the United Nations in China, such as the Development Programme, the Children’s Fund and the Population Funds will cooperate in charge of the implementation of the assisting fund with Chinese government.

On May 19, the United Nations Population Fund committed US$500,000 additional appropriate for the China’s scheme on purchasing internally the medical equipment and drug which are badly needed in the disaster-hit areas. With the former provided emergent assistance, the United Nations Population Fund’s assistance to China’s disaster-hit areas totaled US$550,000.
