According to UNCTD Statistics in 2006, foreign direct investment totaled 1.2 trillion US dollars, record high since year 2000.

In 2006, U.S. recaptured first place in attracting foreign direct investment with a total of 177 billion US dollars, overtaking U.K., which recorded 170 billion US dollars. France ranked at NO.3 with 88 billion US dollars. Developed countries attracted 800 billion US dollars of foreign direct investment, which netted a 50% increase over the previous year. E.U. represented 45% of the total foreign direct investment in developed countries.

In 2006, China still attracted the most foreign direct investment among developing counties, ranking at NO.4 worldwide. Foreign capital inflow in Africa was focused on petroleum exploration and refining industries. An increasing demand for energy resources resulted in doubled foreign direct investment in Russia while Latin American countries like Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador suffered a decline due to their disadvantageous environment to attract foreign direct investment.

UNCTD predicted that in 2007 foreign direct investment will still face many challenges. Major factors include a slower growth of global economy, continuous unbalance of external economy and fluctuations of the exchange rate market and so on. These potential negative factors could affect the global capital flow of monies and reduce the future foreign direct investment gains that were previously accomplished during the past several years.
