Macao sees rise in number of new firms

MACAO, Nov. 12 -- Macao logged 875 new companies in the third quarter, seeing a year-on-year rise of 10.2 percent, according to official statistics issued Monday.

The figures released by the government-run Statistics and Census Service (SCS) showed that the new firms registered with a total capital of 175 million patacas (21.88 million U.S. dollars).

Some 30 percent of the new enterprises operate in the wholesale and retail sector, followed by the business services sector (20.7 percent) and the construction sector (17.5 percent), the figures indicated.

Among the newly incorporated companies, 70.2 percent were each set up with a registered capital of 50,000 patacas (6,250 U.S. dollars) or less, according to the statistics.
