TAIYUAN, April 2-- Coal producing enterprises will have to contribute to sustainable development in north China's Shanxi Province, China's leading coal producing province, according to local authorities. The charge will reflect the quantity of resources utilized. Specific charges will include 14 yuan for a ton of steam coal, 18 yuan for a ton of anthracite coal and 20 yuan for a ton of coke. Coal producing enterprises will also have to fork out 10 yuan for each ton of coal as security for restoring the ecological environment in the mine area and another five yuan for conversion and development of the mines. The money, estimated to be about 10 billion yuan each year, will be used to improve the ecological environment, support the transformation of resources cities and tackle social problems generated by mining. Shanxi, which represents one-sixtieth of China's territory in size, turns out a quarter of the country's coal and two-fifths of its coke. In the two decades since China's reform and opening-up began, Shanxi's coal output has reached five billion tons, but mining has taken a toll on the local environment, resulting in an economic loss of some 30 billion yuan. |
