Thanks to booming trade with China, Asia became Brazil's top trading partner in 2006, surpassing Europe and the United States, according to data released on Sunday. Compared with the previous year, Brazil's total trade with mainland China rose by 32.5 percent in 2006. The exports to China, worth nearly 8.4 billion U.S. dollars, almost equaled its total combined exports to Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. This represents an increase of 22.9 percent. Brazil's exports to China's Hong Kong and Taiwan topped 1.6 billion dollars, making Brazil's total exports to Asia worth more than 18 billion dollars. The imports from China increased to nearly 8 billion dollars last year, while Japan, South Korea and Singapore together contributed another 8 billion dollars. In total, Brazil's trade with Asia stood at more than 34 billion dollars, taking up the largest proportion in its nearly 44 billion dollars' international trade last year. "This is the result of Brazilian business people seeking lower prices, more competitive products and better quality products," Armando Meziart, Brazil External trade minister, said.
