Beijing International High-tech Expo (CHITEC)" http://english.chitec.cn/hitech/index.jsp About CHITEC As approved by the State Council and co-sponored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Information Industry of the People's Republic of China, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the State Intellectual Property Office and the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, China Beijing International High-tech Expo (CHITEC) is a state-level event for international exchange and cooperation among the high-tech industries. CHITEC is organized by CCPIT Beijing Sub-council and held annually in May. It has become one of the most important first-class annual exhibitions events. The first CHITEC was held in 1998 in the name of China Beijing International High-Tech Industries Week and was officially renamed as "Beijing International High-tech Expo (CHITEC)" in 2002. CHITEC has helped publicize China's policies and environment for development, provided opportunities for commercialization and market entry of technological achievements and created the market environment for the integration of technologies, professionals, information, capital and management in the high-tech industries. It has also promoted the commercialization, industrialization and globalization of high and new technologies, improved the economic and technological exchange and cooperation between China and other countries, accelerated the exchange of new concepts and new ideas in high-tech industries and boosted the development of regional economies. After eight year of great success, CHITEC has gained great reputation in the high-tech and relevant industries in China and abroad, with its significant size, rich coverage, widespread international and domestic attendance and influences and has become an important platform for China's international technological and economic exchange and cooperation. During the previous eight events, 2,894 projects have been concluded with total contractual value of over USD 37 billion; over 540 foreign government agencies and delegations have made their presence; over 2.4 million visitors and over 12,000 Chinese and foreign institutions and enterprises have attended the event, 2,893 Chinese and foreign lecturers had made speeches and over 50,000 Chinese and foreign businessmen have attended the trade fairs. Attaching great importance and providing full support to CHITEC, a great number of Party and State leaders have visited CHITEC, met with distinguished guests from other countries attending CHITEC and made keynote speeches in various important events of CHITEC, including President Hu Jintao, Mr. Jia Qinglin, Mr. Huang Ju, Mr. Hui Liangyu, Ms. Wu Yi and Mr. Zeng Pengyan and leaders from the National People's Congress, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and various ministries and commissions under the State Council as well. Up to now, over 20,000 foreign visitors have attended the exhibitions, forum conferences and trade fairs and the number of foreign visitors and enterprises has seen a stable increase. Distinguished foreign guests of CHITEC include senior officials like Argentinean ex-President Menem, Spanish ex-Prime Minister Gonzalez, Japanese ex-Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu, German ex-Prime Minister Schmidt, Korean ex-Prime Minister Lee Soo-Sung and Italian ex-Vice Prime Minister Demichelis, representatives of international organizations including the General Secretary of UNIDO, the General Secretary of WTO, Director of United Nations Environment Program, Chairman and General Secretary of International Science Parks, presidents and CEOs of the World Top 500 enterprises like American Stock Exchange, IBM, GE, Morgan Stanley, Siemens, Thyssen-Krubb, ABB, Electricité de France, Carrefour, Bouygues, Vivendi, Ericsson, Nokia, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Panasonic and Itochu, and world famous scientists like 1999 Nobel Prize Laureate in Economics Robert A. Mundell, 2000 Nobel Prize Laureate in Medicine Paul.Greengard and 2001 Nobel Prize Laureates in Economics Spence and Joseph Stiglitz. Since the Sixth Beijing International High-tech Expo in 2003, government and economic and trade delegations from all 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government, most of cities directly under State planning, Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR have attended CHITEC and taken advantage of this comprehensive international platform established by CHITEC to launch large-scale and multi-field investment attraction and project-promotion campaigns. A large number of world famous enterprises from China and abroad have also promoted their high-tech products in CHITEC and many world leading high-tech enterprises like Nokia, Siemens, GE, Canon, Epson, LG and Kyocera and Chinese high-tech enterprises like Lenovo, Stone, Haier, Hisense, Changhong, Shougang and Spacechina have attended the CHITEC since its debut. With the exhibitions, forum conferences, trade fairs, major activities and Internet as media, a number of well-organized activities under CHITEC like Electronic Information and Modern Communication Technologies Exhibition, Biomedical Engineering Exhibition, Environmental Protection Technologies Exhibition, Meeting of the International Business Leaders Advisory Council to the Mayor of Beijing, China Economic Summit, International Investment Project Fair, Government Procurement Project Fair, Returned Overseas Chinese Students and International Science and Technology Project Exchange and Online Recruitment Fair are held on annual basis.
