Foreign trade in the second half of the year should be positive despite a sharp decline in trade surplus figures for the first half. This is according to the Vice Minister of Commerce, speaking at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday. Gao Hucheng says trade surplus fell to 99.03 billion U.S. dollars in the first six months, down 11.8 percent from the same period last year. Meanwhile, export growth in the first half was 5.7 percentage points down from a year earlier. While looking at the month of June, that slowed 10-and-a-half percentage points from a month earlier. Gao says falling exports are mainly due to government policies to cut exports of high-polluting and high-energy-consuming products. He's promised that the ministry will scrutinize difficulties in certain export industries, and lend aid when the time is appropriate. |
