BEIJING, Sept. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- Heated competition has led to the extinction of 27 air-conditioner brands in China, the Economic Information Daily quoted figures from the State Information Center(SIC) as saying on Thursday.

According to a report released by the SIC on China's air-conditioner industry in 2005, the domestic sales of air-conditioners rose steadily while exports remained the same as last year, the newspaper reported.

The number of air-conditioner brands dropped by 27 to 69 in the domestic market, according to the SIC survey of 750 outlets and department stores in 106 cities across the country.

Among the 69 brands, 48 have an individual market share of lessthan 1 percent in major cities.

The SIC report said competition among different air-conditionerbrands has become more fierce in 2005 due to the rise of competition costs, including raw material cost, manufacture cost and sales cost.

Merciless competition has made the strong stronger. Haier, Midea, Gree and Chigo, the top four air-conditioner brands in China now control 54 percent of the market, according to the newspaper.

Although air-conditioner retailing has been rising this year, the growth rate has slowed down, Cai Ying, an SIC official was quoted as saying.

The newspaper attributed this to the large stockpile and relatively cool weather in 2005, saying there are still 10 millionair-conditioners in the storeroom.

Despite overseas anti-dumping measures and the appreciation of China's currency, the country's air-conditioner exports have maintained their growth momentum since last year, the newspaper said.

From August 2004 to July 2005, China exported a total of 24.68 million air-conditioners, up 9.32 percent year on year, figures show.

Experts believe the air-conditioner market performance in 2005 is normal and rational, and expect continued stable growth in the industry to in the near future, the newspaper said.
