BEIJING, Sept. 22 -- Shanghai currently is hosting the 36th General Assembly of the World Trade Center Association, or WTCA. This non-governmental organization has, in the past 3 decades or so, aimed to promote international trade, and cooperation.

Since its foundation in 1970, the World Trade Center Association, or WTCA, has been working to promote global trade. It now claims nearly 300 cities as members in over 70 countries worldwide. It aims to provide its members with useful information and services to make their businesses more efficient.

The focus of this year's assembly in Shanghai is a discussion of how to facilitate small and medium sized enterprises, or SMEs to participate in international trade, since SMEs account for a major part of the global economy.

Addressing the audience at a special forum on how to help SMEs enhance their international competitiveness, Long Yongtu, Secretary General of the Asia Bo'ao Forum, said that the healthy development of small and medium sized enterprises requires a fair legal environment, a sound policy environment, and most importantly, a favorable business environment.

It also requires that business people learn to build sound relationship with their counterparts rather than bringing their businesses into "vicious"competition with each other.

Long Yongtu referred to the recent anti-dumping cases against Chinese textile exporters as an example. While criticizing local trade protectionism by some countries, he suggested that small and medium sized enterprises learn to build favorable relations with their counterparts.

This year's assembly is the largest one ever according to the WTCA, with over 100 city members of the Association bringing their domestic entrepreneurs to Shanghai to participate in the hot discussions, trade fairs and various trade shows.

At Wednesday's opening ceremony, Shanghai mayor, Han Zheng, stressed that the metropolis will always have an open heart towards international cooperation and economic globalization, and therefore welcome exchanges and cooperation with different regions.

"Shanghai is speeding up to build itself into one of China's economic, financial, navigation and trade centers. We will participate actively in economic globalization, making full use of markets and resources both in and outside of China, so that Shanghai can be even more open to the world with ever stronger competitiveness," said Han.

Over 600 representatives from WTCA are attending the gathering. Through them, trade opportunities existing in China, and especially in Shanghai will be known all over the world. As Guy Tozzoli, president of the World Trade Center Association says, his organization has provided China with abundant opportunities to develop trade relations with foreign counterparts.

"China's entry into the WTCA opened the door for many Chinese cities to join the WTCA family. It also set the stage for increased overseas investment here. We are very proud of all our members in this great country and look forward to working closely with them to enhance their further economic development," said Tozzoli.

WTCA now has 15 member cities in China including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The Association plans to welcome another 10 to 15 others in the coming year.
