Q: It is reported that China has filed a lawsuit against Canada’s import restriction measures on steel and other products at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Could you please provide some details?
A: On August 15, China filed a case against Canada’s import restriction measures on steel and other products at the WTO.
Canada has disregarded the rules of the WTO by introducing tariff rate quotas on imports of steel products and imposing discriminatory tariffs on so-called products containing “Chinese steel”. This is a typical practice of unilateralism and trade protectionism, which undermines the legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese side and disrupts the stability of the global steel and other industrial chains and supply chains. China deplores and firmly opposes such actions.
We urge the Canadian side to take immediate action to correct its erroneous practices, uphold the rules-based multilateral trading system, and promote the continuous improvement of China-Canada economic and trade relations.
