Q: Could you share the latest progress in the recent China-EU economic and trade negotiations? Is China concerned that the current frictions might escalate into a full-blown trade war? (MOFCOM Regular Press Conference June 18, 2026)

A: Communication between China and the EU in the economic and trade field remains smooth. On June 9, Ling Ji, Vice Minister of Commerce and Deputy China International Trade Representative, held talks at the EU headquarters with Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Trade and Economic Security. They had an in-depth and comprehensive discussion on the work related to the China-EU trade and investment consultation mechanism, in preparation for the ministerial consultations scheduled to be held in the near future. During the talks, the EU side stated that a trade war is not a goal of the EU’s policy toward China and expressed a positive attitude toward conducting constructive dialogue with China. China is ready to work with the EU to jointly implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two sides, manage differences through dialogue and consultation, properly handle frictions, promote pragmatic cooperation, and facilitate the sound and steady development of bilateral economic and trade relations.
